The railroad grade crossing at Rengstorff Avenue in Mountain View, between the Central Expressway and California Street, will be closed over two weekends to allow crews to reconstruct the crossing and adjacent track, as well as resurface the street.
A free shuttle will be available for pedestrians on Saturday, March 29 and Sunday, March 30, and again Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with stops at Crisanto Avenue by Rengstorff Park for eastbound traffic and at the gas station at the corner of Rengstorff and the Central Expressway for westbound traffic.
The temporary closures will take place March 28-31 and April 4-7, from Friday evening at 8 p.m., until Monday morning. During these closures, drivers and cyclists will have to detour around the construction by using Shoreline Boulevard or the San Antonio Road overpass.
Construction crews will close the tracks in order to replace worn rails, ties and ballast. Work will take place around the clock from approximately 8 p.m. Friday and continue until about 5 a.m. Monday, when the track will be reopened for regular weekday train service.
Impact to Neighbors
Neighbors may hear back up alarms and construction noise from equipment. Two portable light towers, powered by a diesel generator, will be used for night work as well. Construction crews will make efforts to work as quickly and quietly as possible to minimize any disturbance to neighbors.
Impact to Weekend Train Service
There will be no delays in service due to the construction; however, from Friday evening through Sunday evening, all trains will operate in both directions on a single track in the construction area. As a result, passengers waiting for both northbound and southbound trains at Mountain View and San Antonio stations will board from the northbound platform on the first weekend. The following weekend all boarding will be from the southbound platform. Announcements about this will be made by conductors on board trains and at stations.
