Caltrain Breaks Ground on Burlingame Station Project
Built in 1894, the Burlingame Caltrain Station
is about to get an extreme makeover. On Thursday,
June 28, at 10 a.m., officials from Caltrain, the
City of Burlingame and the San Mateo County
Transportation Authority will kick-off the
improvement project.
The $20.5 million construction project will
take a year to complete and will cover a range
of improvement areas, including safety,
accessibility and track capacity. The new
design also includes a pedestrian plaza,
enhanced landscaping, wider sidewalks,
custom shelters and new station fencing.
In order to make necessary platform
improvements at this station, South Lane
will be closed permanently at the railroad
crossing. During the course of the project,
boarding areas will periodically be shifted,
to allow for construction to occur without
closing the station.
The current Burlingame station configuration
only allows one train to be in the station at
a time, which can cause service delays and
requires cars waiting at adjacent crossing
gates to wait for a prolonged period of time.
This project will replace the current
center-boarding platform with outside
boarding platforms on either side of the
tracks, with a new fence between the train
tracks. The new design will improve safety
by preventing pedestrians from crossing the
tracks, except at designated crossing areas,
which will be protected with pedestrian crossing arms.
Thursday’s event will mark a ceremonial closing
of South Lane for the start of construction,
shortly after which the contractor will begin
actual work at the station. For more information
