Police to Ride With Caltrain Engineers for Safety Event May 21
What:
Caltrain's transit police will conduct an Officer on the Train event in
conjunction with six Peninsula police agencies along the rail corridor. Officers and
the news media can ride a special train to observe police at grade crossings,
enforcing railroad-related motor vehicle and pedestrian laws as the train travels
between Palo Alto and Santa Clara.
Who:
Speakers will include Caltrain Board Chair John McLemore, Caltrain board member
and Chairman of the Board of California Operation Lifesaver Art Lloyd, Caltrain
Chief of Protective Services Steve Frew and a representative from the Mountain View
Police Department.
Officers who will be participating in the event include Caltrain's transit police
from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Department and the Amtrak Police Department, as
well as officers from the cities of Palo Alto, Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Santa
Clara and the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department.
When/Where:
Wednesday, May 21.
At 9 a.m., there will be a brief news conference at the Mountain View Caltrain
Station, at Castro Street and West Evelyn Avenue, just after the train arrives.
Police officers and members of the news media can board or detrain in Mountain View
at the following times, as the train travels between Palo Alto and Santa Clara:
| Southbound
| Northbound |
| 9:15 a.m. |
9:50 a.m. |
| 10:25 a.m. |
11:10 a.m. |
| 11:25 a.m. (detrain only) |
Why:
The Officer on the Train event is held as part of the national effort to focus on
rail safety education through Operation Lifesaver, Inc. By riding with the engineer,
local police gain a better understanding of how long it takes to stop a train and an
appreciation of the importance of partnerships with local enforcement in preventing
needless injuries and deaths.
