Caltrain Seeks Comment on Proposed Fare System Changes

Caltrain will hold three public meetings this month to present recommendations and receive comments on proposed changes in the structure and collection of fares.

Many of the improvements are based on recommendations taken from passenger focus groups hosted by the rail agency. Expanding the youth discount to riders between the ages of five and 17, currently the youth discount on most fare medium is offered to children between the ages of five and 11 is one such change. Caltrain also will offer a senior/disabled/youth 10-ride ticket.

The proposals respond to significant growth over the last several years and would promote fare equity by reducing the fare structure from nine zones of various lengths to six equal zones.

Other proposals include:

  • Ticket validity periods and types would change. One-way tickets would be valid for three hours, for example.

  • A Day Pass would replace Round-trip tickets.

  • Use of ticket validators would be required with 10-ride tickets.

  • Onboard ticket sales would be eliminated and Caltrain would become a Proof-of-Payment system, where all passengers would need a valid ticket before boarding.
Caltrain has scheduled the following meetings to receive comment on the proposals:
  • Tuesday, Feb. 18 6 p.m.
    Santa Clara Police Department
    601 El Camino Real
    Santa Clara

  • Thursday, Feb. 20, 6 p.m.
    Caltrain Administrative Office
    1250 San Carlos Avenue
    San Carlos

  • Monday, Feb. 24, 6 p.m.
    San Francisco City Hall
    Hearing Room 408
1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place

The Caltrain board would hold a public hearing before approving any of the recommendations.
