Caltrain Fare Adjustment to Take Place in July

Caltrain is making a number of fare adjustments to keep itself financially viable. The changes will occur July 1. All Caltrain tickets will cost 10 percent more, including the Peninsula Pass sticker. The fare increase was approved by the rail agency's Board of Directors following a public hearing in April.

The increase will help Caltrain maintain a higher level of service than previously planned by offsetting declining farebox returns and sales tax receipts. The economic downturn has affected many transportation agencies throughout the region including Caltrain's funding partners, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.

In addition to train ticket price changes, the daily parking rate will increase to $1.50 from $1 and bicycle locker rentals will cost $33 for six-months, a $3 increase.

Caltrain also will eliminate the Discount Off-peak Ticket.

Off-Board Discount Increase

To encourage passengers to purchase train tickets in advance, Caltrain will increase its offboard discount from $1 to $3 effective July 1.

Passengers can purchase tickets from ticket vending machines, at staffed stations, at Caltrain headquarters or through the mail.

Caltrain is discouraging onboard ticket sales to give conductors more time to spend with customers, answering questions and canceling tickets. This measure allows Caltrain to increase fare collection and provide improved customer service.

The validity period on One-way and Round-trip tickets will change from six-months to 30 days. Ten-ride tickets will continue to be valid for 60 days.
