Center Street in Millbrae to be Temporarily Closed

Center Street in Millbrae will be closed at the Caltrain tracks Friday evening, Sept. 13 through Monday morning, Sept. 16 to reconstruct the crossing. The crossing will be reopened during the week but also will close down Sept. 20-23 and Sept. 27-30.

The street closure and detour will be in effect beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday through 5 a.m. on Monday. During the closure an alternate route into the Marina Vista neighborhood will be available to pedestrians and vehicles by taking the Santa Paula crossing at Monterey Street and Santa Paula Avenue. The detour can be accessed by taking Monterey Street on the east side of the tracks, from El Camino Real use Sylvan Avenue to access the temporary crossing.

Work at that crossing will include upgrading ties and rail and improving the crossing with the installation of concrete panels. Construction crews will be working around the clock, and residents and area retailers should expect some noise. However, Caltrain work crews will make every effort to keep noise to a minimum.

The CTX project, the largest rail improvement in Caltrain's history, is modernizing Caltrain for the 21st century. The project will result in a centralized traffic control system, known as CTC, passing tracks in three locations along the rail line and track rehabilitation. CTC eliminates the need to manually operate track switches, a key to decreasing travel time. When the improvements are completed in the spring of 2004, Caltrain will be able to offer safer, more flexible service, including Baby Bullet express service between San Francisco and San Jose.
